Purgatory: Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints

What lies hereafter? How shall we stand before the judgment seat of God? The Church teaches that every soul who dies in the state of grace yet has not made sufficient expiation for forgiven sins must undergo purification before entering Heaven. In Purgatory: Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints, Jesuit Fr. F. X. Schouppe presents the ancient Catholic tradition on Purgatory with clarity, reverence, and theological precision.

Drawing from Scripture, tradition, and the testimony of the saints, Fr. Schouppe explains that the pains of Purgatory are great, surpassing any suffering known on earth, yet perfectly adapted to the needs of each soul. Their duration may vary from brief moments to centuries, according to Divine Justice. Yet within this doctrine shines profound mercy. For those who die imperfectly purified, God provides in Purgatory the means by which they are perfected in Christ and made ready for eternal glory.

Through accounts drawn from the lives of the saints, including St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, St. Gertrude the Great, St. Bridget of Sweden, St. Jean-Baptiste Marie Vianney, and St. Lidwina of Schiedam, readers encounter testimonies of souls permitted to seek relief through the prayers and sacrifices of the faithful. Above all, this work emphasizes the immense efficacy of prayer, penance, almsgiving, and especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered for the dead. It is both a sobering and hope-filled call to avoid Purgatory by growing in Divine Charity and to assist the Poor Souls through concrete acts of love.
