Description

Daughter of an Algonquin mother and an Iroquois father, the “Lily of the Mohawks” as a young girl had been left scarred and visually impaired by smallpox. After being baptized as a young woman, she dedicated her life to Christ through virginity, prayer and humble service. Well known for her charity, she nonetheless endured false accusations, yet after her death in 1680 at the age of 24, her slanderers praised her. Several decades later, she was already popularly known as the “Protectress of Canada”, a title Pope Benedict XVI also used at her canonization in 2012 and which the Bishops of Canada unanimously declared in 2016.
